Ceramic Veneers
Renton, WA

3D Rendering of teeth with ceramic veneers at Kevin Kay DDS Comprehensive Family Dentistry in Renton, WAYour teeth play several significant roles in your mouth. They enable you to bite and chew your food. They control airflow when you speak. They even play a crucial role in the quality of your smile. Even minor imperfections in your teeth can have a significant impact on the appearance of your smile, and your confidence. At Kevin Kay DDS Comprehensive Family Dentistry, we offer ceramic veneers for restoring the appearance of damaged teeth. One of the most common questions we receive is about how long they last.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are a common restoration for minor dental imperfections. They are a thin, shell-like structure that is made to cover the front surfaces of damaged teeth. Veneers are typically made from either composite resin or porcelain, with porcelain being the more popular option. Porcelain looks much more natural, not only resembling the color of your other teeth, but also the way in which enamel reflects light.

What Can Dental Veneers Treat?

Dental veneers can be used to restore a smile affected by some different dental imperfections, including:
•  Chips or cracks that only impact the outermost layer of your teeth.
•  Minor alignment issues. If your teeth have small spaces between them or are slightly overlapped, and these issues do not impact your oral health, veneers can often be used.
•  Unusually shaped teeth.
•  Small teeth.
•  Discoloration that cannot be whitened with whitening procedures.

Factors That Impact the Lifespan of Dental Veneers

The average lifespan of porcelain veneers is between 15 and 20 years. There are, however, many factors that can influence how long they last.
•  Oral habits. If you have a habit of chewing ice, your fingernails, or on writing utensils, you are more likely to do damage to your veneers. Using your teeth as tools to open packaging can also harm your veneers. While porcelain is strong, it is not indestructible. These habits can cause chips or fractures.
•  Poor oral hygiene. While your veneers cannot decay, the exposed areas of your teeth, including right along the edges of your restorations, can. The buildup of plaque and bacteria can also contribute to gum disease and gum recession. When the gums recede, the aesthetics of your veneers are compromised.
•  Aggressive brushing. Brushing too hard can also contribute to gum recession, which can impact the appearance of your veneers.
•  Alcohol. The occasional drink will not impact the life of your veneers, but significant drinking can. The alcohol can dissolve the bonding agent that holds the veneers to your teeth.

How Can I Make Sure My Veneers Last?

There are steps that you can take to help ensure that your veneers last. First, brush and floss your teeth every day. Maintain regular dental visits. Avoid biting and chewing on anything too hard and using your teeth for tools. Taking proper care of your mouth, and your veneers can help to ensure the longevity of your dental veneers. Dental veneers are a common treatment for restoring the appearance of your teeth, the quality of your smile, and your confidence. Taking proper care of your veneers can ensure that they last.
