Dental Cleaning Renton, WA

Woman talking to dentist during dental exam at Kevin Kay DDS Comprehensive Family Dentistry in Renton, WAThe American Dental Association recommends regular dental visits, which includes dental cleanings every year. At Kevin Kay DDS Comprehensive Family Dentistry, you are typically recommended oral hygiene visits after every six months. However, if you have exceptionally good oral health, the frequency of visits may also be reduced.

Why are Dental Cleanings Done?

Dental cleanings, or dental prophylaxis, is a purely preventive measure that is taken to reduce the risk of dental caries and periodontal disease.

There are many dental problems in their early stages that you may be unaware of. These problems are often not visible to the naked eye and cause no pain. Most commonly, dental plaque accumulates on your teeth and hardens, turning into calculus or tartar. Even with meticulous brushing and flossing at home, the hardened calculus cannot be removed. If your teeth are not cleaned professionally, it can lead to periodontal diseases and cavities that may eventually result in tooth loss. However, a prophylaxis appointment can help us detect a problem in its early stage and nip it in the bud before it takes root.

Simple procedures like dental cleanings can prevent the need for costly dental services later on, and they only require you to visit us twice a year.

What Dental Cleanings Involve

Depending on the condition of your mouth, the time it takes to perform a dental cleaning can vary; however, it usually only takes 30 to 60 minutes to perform.

Dental cleaning involves several steps:
•  Oral Examination: We will first examine your mouth with the help of a small mirror which will allow us to detect problems in hard-to-see areas. These problems can include the buildup of tartar, tooth decay, gum swelling and irritation and signs of bleeding.
•  Removal of Tartar: An ultrasonic device with a round, smooth tip which produces vibrations is used to shake loose the larger pieces of accumulated tartar from your teeth. It also irrigates your mouth to get rid of loose debris. Once the larger pieces of calculus have been dislodged, we use fine pointed instruments called scalers to scrape off the stubborn tartar from each tooth surface individually.
•  Cleaning With Prophylaxis Toothpaste: Gritty-textured prophylactic toothpaste is placed inside a rubber cup, which is spun on the tooth. The gritty toothpaste will clean your teeth and give them a smooth, shiny surface.
•  Flossing: Even though you may perform flossing at home, professionally done flossing at Kevin Kay DDS Comprehensive Family Dentistry will go deep between your teeth and take out all the debris that may have lodged there during the tooth-cleaning process. You will then be given a liquid solution to rinse out your mouth.
•  Fluoride Treatment: We may recommend a fluoride treatment as well if we think you need it. This will involve applying a flavored gel onto your teeth, sometimes with the help of a mouth tray. This can help prevent cavities for several months.

After a dental cleaning, your mouth will feel fresh, and your teeth will look smooth, clean, and white.

When it comes to the health of your teeth, regular dental cleanings are extremely vital. Typically, we recommend you visit us every six months, but people who have periodontal diseases may need to come in every two months.
